It is my privilege and honor to be chairing our 5th annual Green Festival at the beautiful Village Center on behalf of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce.
Since Real Estate is my passion, I thought I’d give you some valuable tips on how homes become GREEN in honor of our Green Festival on Saturday, June 15th from 1-2pm.
SO HOW DO HOMES BECOME GREEN?
Let’s start with landscaping, or Xeriscaping, which simply means using native plants, which significantly reduces the need for watering, fertilizers and herbicides. Don’t miss the Long Island Native Plant Initiative at the festival. Remember that tree preservation reduces landscaping and future energy costs and helps provide winter wind breaks or summer shade. Additional landscaping improves the environment even more: One tree can filter 60 lbs of pollutants from the air each year!
Every part of your home can be improved for energy efficiency! Solar roofing for electricity or hot water, more durable roof coverings. Check out Sunrun – The New Solar Utility – they own and manage the system so the homeowner doesn’t have to.
Have you heard of Oriented Strand Boards (OSB)? It’s an engineered wood product that does not require large trees for its manufacture. It is resource efficient and enhances durability and is used to sheathe roofs and walls in most new homes.
Windows? Buy the low-E glass coatings. Gas filler between layers, and composite framing materials, keep heat inside in the winter and outside in the summer. Incorporating passive solar design features like large, south-facing windows, helps heat the home in the winter and allows for increased natural day lighting.
Selecting more efficient, correctly sized heating, cooling, and water-heating equipment can save you lots of money. Tankless water heaters are great, they provide hot water on demand at a preset temperature instead of storing it, which reduces or eliminates standby losses. Geothermal heat pumps work with the Earth’s renewable energy and can also heat water.
For all your appliances, Energy Star rated products save an average of 30 percent over standard models! Time to upgrade! Even new toilets have redesigned bowls and tanks that use less water, but function more efficiently than first generation low-flow models. The energy efficiency of refrigerators and freezers has tripled over the last three decades because they have more insulation, advanced compressors, better door seals and more accurate temperature controls. Did you know that front-loaders use 40% less water and half the energy of conventional models? Amazing Savings!
Hope this helps all of us become the change we wish to see in the world!
