Port Jefferson Village Go Green (PJV-GG) will celebrate its 6th year this coming November with two events. Our Information Fair will be held on November 2nd, Noon to 4 at the Village Center. On Wednesday, November 13th, we are thrilled to be welcoming Dr. Doug Tallamy (University of Delaware), who will be speaking at the Village Center at 7 PM. His new book, Bringing Nature Home, provides a fascinating look at how we can support birds and other wildlife by increasing the number of native plants, trees and flowers in our yards. He has graciously allowed us to use his book title for the theme of our event.
PJV-GG was formed 6 years ago through the efforts of Dr. E. Ann Kaplan, director of the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook, and John Lutterbie, Chairperson of Theatre Arts. He partnered with Naomi Solo of Port Jefferson Village and together they have expanded PJV-GG to Include the Village of Port Jefferson, all the Port Jefferson Schools, faculty and administration, our own Port Jefferson Library, LISEC, the Maritime Explorium, Garden Clubs, and Village Center.
Themes of past information fairs have included recycling, environment in and around the home, water, and youth leading the way. With huge support from local folk like Kathy O’Sullivan, Barbara Haegele (whose Green Elephant Table is fast becoming a legend), School Superintendent Ken Bossert, Mayor Garant, Professor Celia Marshik, Library personnel Val Schwarz and Nikki Greenhalgh, Lauren Hubbard of the Explorium, and many others, this effort is gaining wonderful momentum.
We are very pleased to have the cooperation of Jolie Powell, whose efforts to bring more people together beautifully support the efforts of PJV-GG.
We hope to have a series of talks in the next academic year. For further information, or to join the Go Green team, call 473-3549.
